Welcome to the Creating Instructional Materials using Plain Language e-Learning.

This e-Learning is all about rewriting any text so you can use it in reading lessons.

Most texts are not written with adult literacy learners in mind, so you may find you need to adapt texts so you can use them for teaching reading. This e-Learning will give you the tips and tricks you’ll need to find appropriate texts and edit them so your learners can read them with a bit more fluency.

Throughout this e-Learning, you’ll see firsthand how an online article was rewritten in plain language for literacy learning.

The article is “How to Use the 4 Ds of Effective Time Management,” written by B. Collins for Forbes Magazine on June 14, 2018.

Here’s the link to the original article:

There are four videos in this e-Learning:

  1. Creating Instructional Materials using Plain Language
  2. Choosing Text (suggestions for what types of text to edit into plain language)
  3. Screen Capture Video of Choosing Text Online
  4. Case Study (plain language editing sample of an online article rewritten for literacy learning)

There is also a handout that goes with the e-Learning content.

The handout is in colour or black and white. Most of the content is included in the videos, but you may want to print it to follow along with the video, if that is your learning style.

  • You can view the Creating Instructional Materials using Plain Language handout (colour) here.

Download and save the handout for future reference. Or use it to teach instructors and tutors how to revise texts that interest their learners.

Share the handout with others and review this e-Learning as often as you like.
