Onset Rime Blending Strategy

Onset Rime Blending Strategy

This video introduces the Onset-Rime Blending strategy—a simple way to help learners decode unfamiliar words by breaking them into smaller, more manageable parts.

What is Onset-Rime Blending?

  • Onset = the first sound(s) in a word (e.g., b in “bat”)
  • Rime = the rest of the word, starting with the vowel (e.g., at in “bat”)
  • Blending the two parts helps learners decode the full word.
Reflection Question:

What kinds of words or texts might be most useful for learners to practice Onset-Rime Blending?

Try it out!

Look at the Onset-Rime Blending section in the handout (page 8). What kinds of simple, everyday word lists could you use—like grocery items or household objects? How might you encourage learners to break words into parts and build confidence finding those words in print?

When you're ready, continue to the final strategy: Context Analysis.
