CALP Connections: Summer 2025

Building Relationships, Trust and Inclusion with Elder Lucille, Upcoming Professional Development Opportunities, PGFL Award Recipients, and more...

A Message from Leslie Carbone,
Board Secretary

2024/2025 was another busy and productive program year, and like everyone else, the CLN Board stayed active and engaged. We met in Edmonton in November, which was a wonderful opportunity to connect and get to know our fellow board members better. It was a fruitful couple of days filled with meaningful discussions and planning. After a few virtual meetings, we had the chance to meet again in April at Pigeon Lake. Those who were able to attend had a great time, and those of us who couldn’t are already looking forward to next year.

One part of the CLN Board — the Governance Committee — has been hard at work drafting an Advocacy Policy. This has been a significant undertaking, and it’s been very interesting to watch and provide input on how the suggested policy takes shape. The goal of this policy is to ensure that all of CLN’s advocacy efforts align with our organizational objects, bylaws, purpose, and policies.

Symposium 2025 made waves throughout the CALP System! Another fantastic event was delivered by CLN, filled with learning, laughter, and networking. A huge thank you to all of the CLN staff for their tireless work planning and delivering such a valuable event! I was fortunate to attend the Government of Alberta breakout session and learned that in 2023/2024, the CALP system served 19,620 unique Literacy and Foundational Learning Albertan learners. Wow — what an incredible impact each and every one of us is making!

Joining a board is a great way to make a difference. You help guide decisions, support leaders, and contribute to the growth of the organization. It’s also a chance to meet new people, develop leadership skills, and share your expertise with a cause you care about. Personally, I’ve learned so much — from how to take proper meeting minutes, to gaining the confidence to speak up on issues I'm passionate about, to understanding board governance and how an effective board operates. It’s inspiring to see how a diverse group of people can come together to form a strong, successful team.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, whether that includes holiday time or continuing to do meaningful work during pleasant weather!

Interested in joining the CLN Board?

We’d love to hear from you!

Building Relationships, Trust and Inclusion with Elder Lucille Provost

In honor of National Indigenous History Month, we are excited to highlight personalized coaching sessions with Elder Lucille Provost, an Elder representative in the CALP system and the Community Outreach and Learning Coach at Pincher Creek Adult Learning Program.

Elder Lucille is a passionate advocate for Indigenous learner engagement and the Truth & Reconciliation Commission. Her personal healing journey is a powerful gift she shares with others, and her coaching sessions provide a unique opportunity to learn about:

  • Indigenous Ways of Knowing and cultural practices that have shaped generations.
  • Creating safe spaces for Indigenous learners and building meaningful connections with them.
  • Engaging with Elders and understanding their invaluable role in learning programs.
  • Truth & Reconciliation, including the generational effects of residential schools and how we can move forward together in reconciliation.

These sessions are an excellent chance for CALP staff, educators, and community leaders to reflect on their practice, deepen their cultural understanding, and foster inclusion within their programs.

Book your session today and take an important step toward supporting Indigenous learners and building stronger, more inclusive communities.

The Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy (PGFL) Announces the 2025 Grants Program Recipients

Peter Gzowski began the Peter Gzowski Invitationals (PGIs) in 1986 to raise money for, and awareness about, the literacy challenges facing the country. Following Peter’s death in 2002, the PGFL, created with an endowment from the federal government, took on responsibility for the PGIs.

The 20th anniversary of Peter’s death, along with changes observed in fundraising efforts and the impact of COVID-19, led PGFL’s Board of Directors to discuss how the PGFL could have a different impact on the literacy challenge. As a result, the Board of Directors for the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy (PGFL) ended the PGIs for Literacy on December 31, 2022.

The Foundation now provides grants to organizations working in the area of literacy. Peter’s vision lives on through financial support to literacy projects across the country.

Congratulations to the Alberta-based organizations who have been named as recipients of the 2025 PGFL Grant:

The NorQuest College Foundation
Literacy on Location: Meeting Learners Where They’re At

PALS – Project Adult Literacy Society
LEAD – Literacy, Empowerment, Advancement, Development

Rainbow Literacy and Learning Society
Enhancing Capacity for Rainbow Literacy and Learning Society

Willow Creek Community Adult Learning Society
Project Full Circle

Literacy in Action

Did you know there is an open educational resources and instructional materials website? It’s called AlphaPlus.

This website is a collection of "quality instructional materials and content that tutors and instructors can use with adult learners." The resources are free and many are reproducible. You can find resources for a variety of areas including the following:

  • Reading instruction
  • Writing instruction
  • Test and exam preparation
  • Empowering learners

The Reading Instruction is divided into 3 levels with Level 1 & 2 covering the foundational learning skills of adults in Community Adult Learning Programs.

A few good ones to check out are the BC Reads series, or Reading Skills Stories. I like the Reading Skills Stories for its structured literacy approach. The adult stories reinforce letter sounds a learner could be working on. The decodable stories have two formats - interactive on a device, or in a PDF version.

Why not check out AlphaPlus?
