A Message from Rochelle Galeski, Board Director
Join Our Board – A Community That Truly Cares
My name is Rochelle Galeski and I coordinate the Medicine Hat College Pathways Adult Learning Foundations program, which covers Medicine Hat, Brooks, Cypress County, County of 40 Mile and FALP. I have worked in the CALP system for eight years and I am proud to be part of such a collaborative and responsive learning environment.
I served on the Board a few years ago, both as a secretary and as a director, and after taking a break I’m so pleased to share that I’ve rejoined the Board as a director. It feels incredibly good to be back, especially at such a unique and exciting time in our journey.
Serving on the Board for CLN has been a meaningful and inspiring experience. It’s not just a Board, it’s a community of passionate individuals who truly believe in the power of foundational learning to change lives across Alberta.
What makes this Board so special is the heart each member brings to the table. Every voice matters. Every contribution is valued. And together, we share a common commitment to supporting learners in ways that are innovative, equitable, and sustainable.
Being part of the Board has enriched the way I approach my own work. I’ve learned so much simply by collaborating with people who care deeply, not just about the work itself, but about each other. It’s a space where passion and purpose meet, and where ideas are welcomed and shaped with kindness and respect.
One of the most thoughtful aspects of this Board is how mindful it is of our time and capacity. We all wear many hats, and there’s a genuine understanding that life is full. There's never pressure to overextend, just encouragement to contribute in ways that feel meaningful and manageable. That sense of care makes it easy to stay engaged, and even easier to want to give back.
If you’re someone who cares about lifelong learning, equity, and community, and you want to make a real difference without burning out, consider joining us. You’ll be welcomed into a group that supports each other as much as the learners we serve.
Interested in joining the CLN Board of Directors? Nominations close on June 30th, 2025.

To keep your membership in good standing, confirm a few details about your CALP and provide up-to-date contact information for key staff.
A few things to keep in mind before you receive and fill out the renewal:
- If your organization receives a CALP grant directly from Advanced Education, you are automatically a member of the Community Learning Network
- There are NO membership fees or dues to pay
- Our membership year is aligned to the CALP grant cycle, from July 1st to June 30th
- Renewing your CALP's membership helps us ensure our records are current, so we can continue to keep you up to date about training and networking opportunities, new resources and supports, and other CALP news from across the province

Council of the Federation Literacy Award
The annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award was created in 2004 by Canada's premiers to recognize literacy achievements in every province and territory. This year is an especially important milestone for the award as it’s the 20th anniversary since the award was first launched in 2004. The award recognizes:
- Outstanding achievement,
- Innovative practice, and
- Excellence.
Help us celebrate and recognize the work and leadership of a community literacy organization by completing and submitting a nomination package . This is a great opportunity to showcase the crucial work that our Foundational Learning Assistance (FLA) and Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) partners do for Albertans, and you are encouraged to consider submitting a nomination. Many of the past winners in recent years have had a strong link to delivering FLA and CALP.
For more information, visit the Council of the Federation website. For other literacy-related events visit our Alberta Government Literacy Awareness Events and Resources page.
Nominations close on May 9, 2025.
If you have any questions about the award and nomination process, please don’t hesitate to email ae.calp@gov.ab.ca.

Literacy in Action
Schools in various provinces across Canada will implement evidence-based instructional practices called ‘structured literacy’ for the 2025-26 academic year. Research has shown that when children are explicitly taught the relationships between letters and sounds and how to use them, they learn to read and spell.
The International Dyslexia Association coined the term Structured Literacy, which is an approach that focuses on instructional content (the What) and essential principles of instruction (the Why). The content focuses on both word recognition and comprehension. The principles of instruction are explicit, sequential and cumulative.
Research shows that using structured literacy practices also supports adults to improve their reading skills.
Teaching Reading is an in-person workshop designed for CALP staff, facilitators and volunteers to learn how to use structured literacy practices in their work with adult literacy learners. If you are teaching reading to adults then reach out to Rebecca Still, CLN Literacy Specialist, to arrange a workshop in your area.

This Month's Spotlight
Thursday, May 15, 2025 marks the 14th anniversary of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD).
The purpose of GAAD is to get us talking, thinking and learning about digital accessibility and inclusion, and the more than One Billion people with disabilities/impairments.
Digital accessibility refers to the ability of people with disabilities/impairments to independently consume and/or interact with digital (e.g., web, mobile) applications and content.
