Primary Intended Learning Objectives
The CALP Policy Manual identifies a Primary Intended Learning Objective (PILO) for each of the Literacy and Foundational Learning (LFL) categories outlined under Required Programming.
Learning opportunities often have more than one learning objective. The CALP Policy Manual encourages practitioners to think about the main reason they planned a learning opportunity and what most learners wanted to achieve. The CALP Policy Manual outlines primary intended learning objectives for each of the five LFL categories.
Each LFL category also connects to the Skills for Success framework, developed by Employment and Social Development Canada. This framework provides a common structure and language for understanding the knowledge, skills, and abilities people need to participate and thrive in learning, work, and life. Skills for Success:
Include skills that are foundational for building other skills and knowledge
Overlap and interact with each other and with other technical and life skills
Are inclusive and can be adapted to different contexts
The Skills for Success framework is provided as a supplement to the LFL categories. It is not a separate framework that practitioners are required to follow.
This chart illustrates the relationship between Literacy and Foundational Learning, Primary Intended Learning Objectives, and Skills for Success (outlined in the CALP Policy Manual):
