Recognition
Recognition does not need to cost a lot of money or require a huge investment of time. Some volunteers respond best to a personal note. Others might want to share their own expertise by offering supplemental training or acting as a mentor for new volunteer tutors. Pay attention to which recognition individual volunteers respond best to and likewise what makes them uncomfortable.
Within the CALP Policy Manual, volunteer recruitment and recognition are Eligible Expenses under the budget category 'Program Delivery'. Appropriate and affordable ways to recognize your volunteers include:
- Words: capture the impact of their volunteer efforts with a handwritten note
- Pictures: consider including photos of volunteers* in action on your website or social media pages (*require consent)
- Volunteer of the month: highlight a volunteer’s significant contribution* in your CALP office or community newspaper
- Time: regularly telephone or arrange for a face-to-face catch up
- Small gifts: gift cards, stationary supplies, a sweet treat, cup of coffee etc.
