Welcome

This workshop will explore some traditional practices that show respect for the culture from our community’s perspective. We encourage you to explore some of your community’s own practices and guidelines.

Challenge Your Assumptions

In our experience, there are a number of things that we need to let go of in order to meet the needs of Indigenous learners. First, whether you are Indigenous or Non-Indigenous, you likely need to be more aware of your culture in your interactions. In our experience, most of us are still in the process of figuring out our own culture. This is normal. We don’t always understand the way our culture affects our assumptions, our communication styles, or our attitudes towards education. All of these cultural assumptions are part of how we communicate with and deal with people we work with.

We hope that you will challenge your assumptions and your view of your own experience for the benefit of the learners in your community.

Reflecting on Your Own Community's Context

Throughout this workshop, you will be asked to reflect on your own community's context. The goal of this workshop is not to provide easy answers, but to provide you with tools, strategies and good questions to ask yourself and your community about how to better engage with, welcome and support Indigenous learners.

As you work through this e-learning, watch for the downloadable "Reflections Worksheets" that you can print and complete independantly.

Each Worksheet is marked with a  Download  to remind you to download and print it.
