RAP Comprehension Strategy
This video introduces the RAP strategy—an easy-to-remember approach to help adult learners understand and recall what they read. RAP stands for:
- R: Read a paragraph
- A: Ask yourself, “What was the main idea?”
- P: Put the main idea into your own words
Reflection Question:
How could you introduce the RAP strategy to a learner who struggles to remember what they read?
Try it out!
Look at the RAP section in the handout (page 7), and take a few minutes to think about activities that would help a learner try this strategy. What types of real-world texts could your learners read and then summarize in their own words? How might you encourage them to pause and ask questions about what they’ve read?
When you're ready, move on to the next strategy: Onset-Rime Blending.
