The Stages of Writing

The Stages of Writing

Good writing is the result of a process that includes four stages: Think, Write, Edit, and Proofread. Many literacy and ABE/GED learners think that writing means you write down some things as they come into your head, then hand it in. I explicitly teach four stages so they can see the separate skills and activities that come into play at various times in the writing process.

I teach learners these four stages of writing in order to break down the writing process into more manageable chunks, each requiring specific skills. I want them to be aware of what stage they are in at any moment so they can concentrate on each skill in its turn.
