Context Analysis Strategy

This video introduces the Context Analysis strategy, which helps learners use clues from the surrounding text to understand and sound out unfamiliar words.

What is Context Analysis?

  • Context Analysis combines both comprehension and decoding.
  • Learners use clues from the sentence or paragraph to:
    • Guess the meaning of an unknown word
    • Check if a word they decoded makes sense in context
  • It builds confidence and supports real-world reading success.
Reflection Question:

How can you help a learner use context clues instead of stopping every time they see a word they don’t know?

Try it out!

Look at the Context Analysis section in the handout (page 9). What kinds of real-life texts could you use that include helpful clues—like signs, forms, or workplace notices? How might you encourage learners to make predictions and use those clues to figure out unfamiliar words?

When you're ready, continue to the final page to wrap up this e-learning.
