e-Learning Overview
Essential skills are the foundation of how adults learn, work, and navigate daily life. The Essential Skills e-learning introduces CALP staff to the Government of Canada’s Essential Skills Framework and explores how the nine skills—like reading, writing, numeracy, and digital technology—connect to the literacy and foundational learning work CALPs do every day. (Note: The Essential Skills Framework has since evolved into Skills for Success, though this e-learning focuses on the original framework.)
Through this e-learning, you will build your confidence in recognizing and supporting the development of essential skills with adult learners. You’ll learn to:
- Understand the 9 Essential Skills and how they apply to everyday life and work
- Recognize how tasks draw on multiple, interconnected skills
- Identify the complexity levels of different essential skills tasks
- Support learners in building essential skills through practical, real-world activities
- Apply essential skills concepts to both community and workplace learning contexts
By the end of this e-learning, you’ll have a clear understanding of how essential skills support adult foundational learning—and practical ways to help learners strengthen these skills in their daily lives.
