This workshop is for participants who are new to the role of Volunteer ESL Tutor. It will orient participants to their role, to the needs of their adult ESL learners, and to relevant materials available online. Participants will learn to design thematic or task based lessons that address learner interests and needs while providing language input, opportunities to practice language skills, and feedback.

Rural Routes: Using Realia with English Language Learners

“Realia” is a term that refers to any real object we use to engage a learner and enhance their learning process.  Examples of realia include a bus schedule, flyer or cereal box.  During this workshop participants will learn how realia can enhance a lesson, and examples of ways to use realia with their learners.

Rural Routes: Strategies for Teaching Grammar

This workshop will help participants gain fluency and confidence when addressing grammar topics. Participants will explore the advantages and limitations of grammar instruction. They will be exposed to a wide variety of strategies and resources as they learn to plan lessons that contextualize grammar into other language skills, provide for focused practice, and provide opportunities to apply what was learned.

This short workshop provides an orientation to a CLB-based writing and speaking assessment tool that can help  participants determine approximate CLB levels in order to place students, make instructional decisions, or determine whether students are ready to take a formal CLB assessment.
