This workshop is for participants who are new to the role of Volunteer ESL Tutor. It will orient participants to their role, to the needs of their adult ESL learners, and to relevant materials available online. Participants will learn to design thematic or task based lessons that address learner interests and needs while providing language input, opportunities to practice language skills, and feedback.

Intentional instruction time in vocabulary encourages learners to notice, focus on and link meaning to new vocabulary. It also provides opportunities for learners to use new vocabulary in both spoken and written communication.  This workshop will look at ways we can provide intentional instruction time, tips to consider, as well as resources.

As part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action, this workshop supports ESL practitioners with content and strategies to teach newcomers about the country’s Indigenous history and cultures. Participants will learn to identify content that newcomers need to understand in order to counter misinformation and bias towards Indigenous Canadians, understand the principles of Indigenous teaching and learning, and develop strategies to teach newcomers about Indigenous peoples and cultures in Canada.

n this workshop, participants will identify mindfulness practices and explore reflection strategies to support healthy boundaries. Participants will learn about compassion fatigue and how to set and enforce realistic expectations regarding their commitment to help and to serve learners.

This workshop gives tutors/instructors the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the CAEC format, access literacy and numeracy materials, understand lesson structures, analyze a CAEC-specific lesson plan, and create their own lesson plan(s) for CAEC learners.

Pictures are one of the most common resources for teaching English language learners. During this workshop, participants will learn about the benefits of using pictures to develop language skills. Participants will also have an opportunity to explore activities and ideas for using pictures in tutorial sessions and classrooms.

Lunch n' Learn

Conscious and unconscious biases are part of being human. During this interactive workshop, participants will examine what bias is and how to mitigate bias.   Participants will also learn practices that are helpful to effectively set expectations for valuing diverse viewpoints and facilitating respectful conversations. The information and teaching practices discussed in this workshop can be utilized in a variety of disciplines/areas to promote equity and inclusion.
