Basic Facilitation Skills For Non-Profit & Government Organizations

Basic Facilitation Skills For Not-For-Profit & Government Organizations is offered by professional facilitators from the Alberta Culture Community Development team. The three-day workshop provides hands-on ‘learn while doing’ and accessible instruction in the art of group facilitation. This is a practical workshop that provides learning through instruction, discussion, small and large group work, practice and feedback.

Learning Outcomes for the Basic Facilitation Skills Program:


Overall Outcomes of the Workshop:


1. Participants understand the basic concepts, approaches, techniques, tools and application of facilitation
2. Participants demonstrate knowledge and practice skills in facilitation and receive feedback
3. Participants feel more confident and competent in facilitation and identify opportunities to do so in their work

Learning Outcomes for Each Section of the Workshop:

Core Concepts:

  • participants will have an understanding of what facilitation is and the role of a facilitator 
  • participants will explore types of facilitation and uses
  • participants will explore the competencies of a successful facilitator
  • participants will understand the difference between process and content
  • participants will understand that facilitation includes stages of planning (or designing), conducting (or delivering) and follow up

Designing:

  • participants will understand how important it is to have clear purpose and outcomes for their facilitation sessions
  • participants understand the key elements needed to design effective facilitations

Delivery:

  • participants will understand the importance of being aware of how the facilitator’s verbal and non-verbal communication can impact the group and the process
  • participants will learn how and why it is important to record/capture the information generated by the group during a facilitation
  • participants will appreciate the importance of understanding group dynamics, group development, and group behaviors in order to lead each unique group facilitation situation
  • participants will explore various challenging group situations they may encounter, then have the opportunity to discuss the strategies for how to avoid these situations or deal with them when they do come up 
  • some introductory tools to support more effective decision making
  • participants understand the importance of maximizing the participation of all for effective facilitation

Participant Practice:

  • to enhance and internalize the information and learnings presented, participants will have the opportunity to be part of a smaller facilitation team that will design and facilitate a short session demonstrated for everyone
  • to enhance and internalize the information and learnings from the training event, facilitation teams will have the opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned from their demonstration experience and receive and provide specific feedback from other participants and instructors 

Time: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm (each day)

Audience: Intended for CALP staff who facilitate programs and educational opportunities for groups/clients/customers/individuals in communities.

Note: This workshop is strictly for not-for-profit and government organization representatives and is not for individuals who provide or intend to provide fee for service facilitation, training, and/or consultation. 

Materials Supplied: Each participant will be provided with a copy of “Facilitation at a Glance – Third Edition” Spiral Bound Booklet

Registration Deadline: March 24, 2017. A minimum of 16 participants is required to run this course.
