Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Registration Fee: $125.00 / person for CALP staff, First Nations College staff or CCI staff

Trainer:

Kristin Dmytriw, Centre for Family Literacy

Session Description:

B.O.O.K.S. is a family literacy certificate training developed by the Centre for Family Literacy, which is based on the Homespun program developed at Brooks Campus of Medicine Hat College and in turn, based on the Motheread program out of North Carolina. In B.O.O.K.S. programs, a facilitator works with a group of parents for 8 weeks, modeling book-sharing strategies. Ideas and themes are discussed and extended by craft and drama activities. Parents also engage in informal writing, often writing a story for their children during the program. Parents borrow books to share at home with their preschool children.

The B.O.O.K.S. training will share examples of books that can be used, as well as suggested crafts and activities to pair with books. The training will also cover how the program is delivered and participants will be able to practice sharing a book in small groups. In addition, tips on good facilitating practices, areas such as multiculturalism, and how to choose good children’s books for preschoolers will be covered in the training.

Registration Deadline: Wednesday, April 3, 2019 (A minimum of 8 people is required to run this training.)

Note: Pre-registration is required; space will not be reserved without payment. To register, please complete the online registration form and submit payment by credit card.
