Creating Technologies to Support Learners of nehiyawewin (Plains Cree)

Description: As has been seen through several commercial products, such as Duolingo and Rosetta Stone, technologies can help people learn languages. This is largely because they provide access to learning materials and opportunities for using the language. Currently, there are few technologies that provide these opportunities for learners of nehiyawewin even though there is growing interest in learning this language. I will talk about some of our group’s efforts towards building learning materials and technologies that will give people the opportunity to learn nehiyawewin.

Instructor: Carrie Demmans Epp is a settler who was raised in Treaty 6 territories. Carrie is also a researcher and educator in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta where she creates and studies the use of technologies for supporting learning.
