What’s New in Adult Literacy? (Oct 2025)

The popular ‘What’s New in Adult Literacy’ is back again this year!

This is an informal discussion to explore what’s new and ongoing best practices when working with adult literacy learners based on recent studies. Rebecca Still, CLN Literacy Specialist, will share key findings from studies and articles related to a specific theme. We’ll then discuss what it means in practice and explore how it impacts your work with adult literacy learners.

Whether you are new or have years working with adult literacy learners you’ll be sure to find something for you.

October Theme: Adult Literacy in Canada-Policies and Practices Yesterday & Today

Canada has a long history in adult literacy both within Canada and around the world yet how many of us know that history? Allan Quigley in the e-learning Building Literacy Practitioners says, “How can we build our field without even knowing where we have come from?” Canada has a fascinating history of adult literacy that has impacted many across the country and around the world. We’ll explore what policies and practices fostered that impact and how we got to where we are today. This can inform what we will do to guide the future.
