What is a micro-credential and how does it work for participants?
Micro-credentials are short-term, flexible learning programs designed to provide industry-specific skills. These programs are typically made up of a series of smaller courses that culminate into a larger certification.
The Instructor in the Foundational Learning Micro-credential program has two specializations for participants - Literacy and Numeracy. Participants will begin their respective programs with a short introductory mini-course, and once completed, they will be able select a further six mini-courses based on their area of need and interest. Courses can be completed in any order, and participants can be work at their own pace. Each mini-course is expected to take between 7 and 10 hours to complete. All courses are facilitated by faculty with extensive experience in Adult Education.
Once all of the mini-courses have been completed, participants will work directly with our faculty to apply their learning to a unique case study through a capstone project. Each project will be unique, and will be driven by the participant’s unique CALP context. Learners will receive recognition for each course completed, and will receive a Micro-Certificate with their specialization once they have completed all required components.
Will this program be relevant to CALPs?
The Instructor in Foundational Learning micro-credential program was developed specifically for Alberta Community Adult Learning Programs. The curriculum is based on current provincial guidelines and both Federal and Provincial resources. Courses were determined through feedback from CALP’s, and designed in collaboration with the Community Learning Network.
