Gathering to Learn: Strategies for Opening the Doors to Learning - (Part 1 of 4)

Registration for this training is now closed.

How we gather matters. The purpose of these workshops is to share, reflect and equip CALP staff with helpful ways to enhance the learning experience for Adult Foundational Learners, from that first initial contact to being an involved witness to a learner’s successful completion of a goal or dream.

CALP Staff will gain understanding of what it takes for a learner to find a learning opportunity, walk in the door, stay, and continue on their learning pathway. This understanding will come from the rich stories and data that our CALP communities across Alberta (both learners and staff) shared with us during a CLN funded research project called “Gathering to Learn”. We will be using the Gathering to Learn field guide as our resource.

These interactive virtual workshops will take place over 4 Mondays in March:

  • March 8 (11:00 am - 12:30 pm): We will explore how we FIND participants through the power of social connections, ease of access and getting the word out there.
  • March 15 (11:00 am - 12:30 pm): This workshop will look at how we ATTRACT participants. This will include exploring how we set up the learning setting, including building relationships, celebrating early successes and what gets in the way.
  • March 22 (11:00 am - 12:30 pm): How we ENGAGE learners will be uncovered together by looking at how we set the tone in relationships, the learning setting, and how we set up for success, using principles of community and possibility thinking as our context.
  • March 29 (11:00 am - 12:30 pm): This workshop looks at the RETAIN stage of a learners’ journey – what keeps people coming, how they return, and what gets in the way.

Throughout all the workshops, CALP staff will explore common barriers and triumphs learners face at each stage of the journey and discover the key things that really make a difference for the learner. In doing so, they will take away ideas that can be tailored specifically for their own learning environments, communities and contexts. Participants will also make connections with other CALP staff in the session as a result of our shared experiences and stories, thus expanding their own networks of support and community.
