HR 101 – Human Resources for the Non-HR Professional

Session Description:
What every manager should know about the managing people... from effective hiring practices to managing performance issues to terminating employees the right way. This Human Resources (HR) Management workshop for “Non-HR Professionals” will include Information Sessions, Pop Quizzes, Small Group Discussions, Best Practices Forum, and a Q & A Hot Seat activity, so everyone can get their HR-related questions answered, and more.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Ensure programs, policies and procedures comply with Alberta Employment Standards Code and Alberta Human Rights Act
- Apply best practices in:
Interviewing & Selection
- Know what to look for when screening a resume, and shortlist candidates efficiently
- Design effective questions to ask during the pre-screening process
- Develop effective interview questions and apply different interviewing techniques Conduct a professional interview meeting that “sells” candidates on the organization
- Avoid asking inappropriate questions that should not be asked in an interview (prevent discrimination)
Orienting & Onboarding New Employees
- Assess current employee onboarding process (gap analysis)
- Identify how to improve current new employee orientation program (best practices for 0-3 months)
- Discover how to continue to engage staff (3-12 months)
Performance Management & Progressive Discipline (including Terminations/Layoffs)
- Describe the performance management cycle and process
- Explain the manager’s and the employee’s roles in performance management (including setting & managing expectations)
- Know what to do before, during and after a performance review meeting
- Apply best practices to the annual performance review process
- Apply the steps of progressive discipline and document performance matters appropriately
- Distinguish between termination for cause and without cause
- Terminate an employee effectively (when and how to have the difficult “firing” meeting)

Cancellation and Refund Guideline/Procedure:
If you are unable to attend a training event, you must notify Community Learning Network via email of all cancellations prior to the first day of the training. Non-attendance does not constitute notice of withdrawal.
If Notice of Cancellation is given 10 or more business days before the training event, the registration fee is eligible for a refund, less a $25.00 administrative fee.
If Notice of Cancellation is given fewer than 10 business days before the first day of the training event, the registration fee is nonrefundable.
Refunds will be applied to the original form of payment (i.e. the credit account used to pay for the registration).
