Professional Development Opportunity for Foundational Adult Learning Practitioners

Learning disabilities affect at least 10% of Canadians. More than 50% of these experience difficulty in learning to read. Learning disabilities (LD) are recognized as a lifelong neurological disorder. It is estimated that at least 30% and possibly as many as 60% of adults in literacy and foundational learning programs have learning disabilities.
Adult foundational learning practitioners are not qualified to diagnose learning disabilities, but it is important to understand, recognize and support the unique learning challenges and needs of these learners.

By the end of the LIFE training, you will have:

• A broader awareness of learning disabilities and their impact on adult foundational learners
• Skills to recognize “red flags” in learners who may have an LD and attention issues
• A repertoire of skill and practical tools to make your programs more responsive to the learners’ needs
• Advocacy strategies to support learners with diagnosed or suspected LD or attention issues
• Knowledge and skills to help learners move towards self-advocacy
Two day LIFE training includes:

Day 1: The Impact of Learning Disabilities on Adult Foundational Learning
• How LD affects an adult’s daily life and learning
• Red flags for possible LD
• How to talk to learners about possible LD
• Different kinds of LD
• Instructional strategies and methods

Day 2: Supporting Adult Foundational Learners with ADHD
• How ADHD affects an adult’s daily life and learning
• Signs and symptoms for possible ADHD
• Accommodations and Coping Strategies
• Instructional Strategies and Methods
• Resources
