Multi-Level Classes - ESL Practitioner's Study Group

Multi-Level Classes - ESL Practitioner’s Study Group

Would you like to gather ideas for your multi-level ESL class?  Would you like to connect with other ESL instructors?  If so join us in this exciting, interactive, online study group.   Participants in this group will have opportunity to gather ideas and solutions to address issues related to their own ESL context. Instruction will be learner-oriented, and designed to meet the communication and content needs of the particular groups of learners participants are working with in their communities.

Week One:  We will look at diversity in English language classrooms as well as the challenges and benefits of multi-level classrooms.  We will also explore grouping considerations when planning activities.

Week Two: We will look at the strategy of adapting the complexity of the language so that the lower proficiency learners read or listen to texts that are easier and learners at higher levels read/listen to texts that are more difficult.

Week Three: We will look at the strategy of scaffolding.  This strategy refers to the support you provide learners, enabling them to make sense of a text or to complete a task.

Week Four: We will look at the strategy of varying the complexity of the tasks.  This strategy uses the same text or topic, but learners do more or less complex tasks.

Week Five: We will look at the strategy of adjusting the communicative stress of the task. This refers to time limits, rate of speech, number of participants, formality of group, length of the text, length of response.
