Parking: Parking is free for CALP staff in the reserved parking stalls at NorQuest. A week before the event you will receive a map with the reserved parking location. You must park in the identified parking lot to have your parking fee waived.

Community Adult Learning Programs are invested in the success of learners who come through their doors. When their dreams include building skills to take the next steps to post-secondary learning there are new learning pathways, new goals and new organizations to manage. Join NorQuest College, your Comprehensive Community Institution, and the Community Learning Network, to learn about the supports, services and resources for learners transitioning from community learning to post-secondary learning.

Morning:

The morning Cracker Barrel session and presentations will bring together a number of speakers from NorQuest, NAIT and Alberta Works to give you first-hand information about what learners transitioning to post-secondary need to know. Presentations will include:

  • Apprenticeship and program updates – NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology)
  • Funding options – Alberta Works
  • Academic and skills assessment for learners - NorQuest Assessment and Testing Services
  • Academic and assistive supports for persons with disabilities - NorQuest Wellness & Accessibility
  • An inside look at becoming a student at NorQuest - NorQuest Student Services
  • Intercultural training and workshops – NorQuest Centre for Intercultural Education
  • Rural Routes Update
  • Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Update
  • Foundations for Learning Update

Afternoon:

Select from a series of professional development workshops from NorQuest and your CALP colleagues. Choose one workshop for each of the 2 afternoon sessions.

1:00 Professional Development Sessions

  • 1A Ambassador Training - Jonathan Robb - Director, Strategic Integration, NorQuest College

Building on the NorQuest College Stakeholder Relations strategy we are offering this course in stakeholder relations training to improve your skill as an ambassador for your organization. Suitable for all levels of the organization, this training will cover best practices in managing stakeholders, engaging stakeholders, and even networking and meeting tips and tricks to maximize your interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

  • 1B Math Literacy – Monica Das - Math Literacy Coordinator, P.A.L.S.

Math Literacy program was developed to meet the needs of adults who have low-level math literacy. The program focuses on adults who want to improve their basic math skills for daily living or increase skills so that they can write entrance exams for higher academic programs or entrance into a job training program such as the apprenticeship. This session will provide tips and resources for tutoring adult learners who have low-level math literacy.

2:00 Professional Development Sessions

  • 2A Supporting Practice Engagement in Community Adult Learning - Lori Smits - Instructor, Academic Upgrading, Faculty of Foundational, Career and Intercultural Studies, NorQuest College

Theories from Dr. Stephen Reder like Practice Engagement and Persistence are a valuable in helping to guide our delivery of literacy practices. However, questions arise regarding ways these theories can be integrated into practice. This session combines theory, research and practical wisdom from the field to identify promising practices that support learner success in foundational learning programs. Participants will identify practical approaches relevant to their learners and explore ways to implement them in their unique programs.

  • 2B Intercultural Communication in Community Learning - Sara Apedaile - Intercultural Specialist, Centre for Intercultural Education, NorQuest College

Does your classroom resemble the United Nations? This session will introduce participants to intercultural communication as an essential skill set for practitioners working with culturally diverse learners.
