Psychological First Aid (Killam September 2021)

Registration is now closed.

This course will support CALP-funded staff, volunteers and system partners to develop a personal understanding of the effects of stress, loss, trauma and grief on others, with emphasis on self-care and personal protection.

Training participants will be introduced to the Red Cross “Look, Listen, Link, Live” model - a resiliency-building approach to emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing that teaches strategies to support ourselves and others to cope with the effects of various types of stress.

The course uses primarily case-based learning and includes the latest evidence from the international community. The program broadens the focus of training from a crisis-centred approach to one of resiliency-building, which is more effective at improving outcomes for people.

Psychological First Aid is a two-day, face-to-face training that touches on the following topics:

  • Stress, Distress
  • Loss and Grief
  • Trauma
  • Vulnerable Populations
  • Supportive Communication
  • Resiliency and Protective Factors
  • Self-Care

With trainers from the CALP system delivering this curriculum, we know you will find many connections to the work you do, and will be able use the skills and knowledge you gain from the training in your role in CALP.

Upon successful completion of the two-day training, participants will hold a 3-year certification in Psychological First Aid, issued by the Canadian Red Cross.
