Times: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm both days
Place: #103 4207 98 Street Greystone Building IV Edmonton, AB T5E 5R7
Part One (Tuesday June 12, 2018) looks into the lives of refugees before their arrival to Canada: what does living in a refugee camp or war zone look like, and how these experiences influence peoples' lives after they arrive in Canada. We will learn about the different ways people come to Canada, the consequences of different immigration status; the influence of culture and connections to the home country on their daily lives; as well as what role changes occur with the families and the impact this has on an individual.
Part Two (Wednesday June 13, 2018) will focus more on the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that often accompanies people who have had to flee violent situations. This is a challenge that many refugees, along with other groups, deal with on a daily basis. Learn about the physiology, symptoms and signs of PTSD in adults, gain an understanding of how this impacts their perceptions and behaviours and discover some strategies for one-on-one interactions for the classroom settings and within groups.
Note: Participants must attend both parts to be receive a certificate of completion.
