Danny won literacy award
In September 2008, Danny Haines won a literacy award for his hard work. The award was from the Alberta government.
It is Danny's first award. He is very excited and happy about the award.
Danny's childhood
When Danny was a boy, he didn't do well in school. He was always in trouble.
When Danny was 15, he ran away to the United States with his brother. They joined the circus.
Life in the circus
Danny was in the circus for 12 years. He learned many skills there. For example:
- He learned to repair equipment.
- He learned to work hard.
- He learned how to get along with people.
New job
Danny left the circus in 1971. He went to Ontario. He worked in the sign business.
Danny couldn't write well. But he had tricks to hide his writing problem.
Danny moved to Edmonton in 1978. He got married and started a family.
Joined a literacy program
Danny was injured six years ago. He had some personal problems too. He decided to improve his reading and writing. He joined a literacy program.
Busy life
Danny has a full-time job. He also volunteers with literacy groups. For example, he speaks to people about literacy. He volunteers with student groups.
