Songbirds love northern Alberta: Part 2
Birds use special flyway
Many songbirds fly through a special area (flyway) near the town of Slave Lake.
Many birds fly between the lake and Marten Mountain. It is easier to fly between the lake and the mountain than to fly over them.
Things to do
You can do many things in this area. For example: camp, fish, swim and go birdwatching.
Boreal centre
You can learn about birds at the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation. It is in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park.
At the centre, you can see displays about birds. You can walk on trails.
In the spring and fall, there are many songbirds in the forests. You can hear them sing.
Ask about tours to the bird observatory.
Free festival
Every spring, there is a songbird festival at the centre. In 2008, the festival is on May 31 and June 1.
These people are walking in the forest near the centre. It is a boreal forest. Boreal forests cover most of northern Alberta.
Bird observatory
The Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory is nearby.
Collect information
Workers collect information about birds. For example:
- They watch for different types of birds.
- They listen for bird songs.
- They catch birds and put bands on the birds' legs. They write down information about each bird.
The information helps answer important questions. For example: How many birds are coming to this area? Are they healthy?
Share information
Bird observatories and other groups around the world share information.
The bands help them to identify and study birds.
