Grammar
Purpose
Correct grammar is not needed in every context.
- Informal writing or writing that is not shared can sound more like speech.
- Formal writing or writing that will be shared or published should follow English grammar conventions.
How
First language English speakers:
- Will recognize correct grammar in speech but may not know the grammar terms.
- Have writers read their sentences aloud to hear if grammar sounds right.
- Writers can revise based on what they hear.
- More formal writing benefits from formal grammar instruction.
Speakers of English as an Additional Language (EAL):
- Grammar terms and formal instruction can be helpful.
- Topics can include:
- Parts of speech
- Sentence and paragraph construction
- Advanced EAL speakers (around Canadian Language Benchmark 6 or higher) may be able to use the first English language speaker’s tactic of reading aloud and listening to their writing in order to make grammatical revisions. They may have internalized a lot of English grammar rules and can go more by “feel.”
