The Can Do Statements are based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). They describe what learners can do at the CLN benchmarks 1 to 12 in the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The purpose of these statements is to present some of the information in the CLB document in language that is accessible to learners. The statements can help facilitate discussions between you and your learners about what they have accomplished and what they still need to develop. The Can Do Statements should be used after benchmarks have been assigned by a reliable methodology, such as standardized placement test or classroom outcomes instrument. The statements themselves are not a means to assess learners or to assign benchmarks. The Can Do Statements support your explanations to learners after accurate benchmarks have been assigned. The statements enhance CLB-based instruction by providing a resource that clearly explains to learners what their assigned benchmarks mean and what they need to focus on as they work toward the next benchmark in each language skill.
