These instructional strategies have been sorted into the five components of reading: phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Each component of reading is accompanied by its own distinct colour and icon:
Phonological Awareness
The ability to hear and work with the sounds in words.
Decoding
The ability to analyze and piece together parts of words, such as the units of sound (phonemes) and units of meaning (morphemes).
Vocabulary
The ability to recognize a word and remember its meaning.
Fluency
The ability to read like you speak - smoothly, naturally and with expression.
Comprehension
The ability to create meaning with print.
