Cloze
Purpose:
Helps readers use their background knowledge and their understanding of the surrounding text to fill in the blank. Readers shift their focus from the words to the meaning of the text.
How:
- Remove words from a piece of text
- Use the context provided by the text to select words to fill in the blank
- Focus on meaning over accuracy
- Ask questions that share the reader's process for choosing the selected word(s)
