Inference
Purpose:
Reading beyond the words is an important part of comprehension. Inference relies on readers using their prior knowledge and experience to read beyond and between the lines.
How:
- Use examples of inference from everyday life
- Encourage readers to become inference detectives
- Look for hidden messages or meaning in text
- Be explicit about how you are using your prior knowledge and experience to gather information beyond just reading the words
