Literacy & Learning Symposium 2027

The Literacy & Learning Symposium is hosted by the Community Learning Network with funding and support from the Government of Alberta. This annual province-wide professional development event is designed to support Alberta’s Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) staff, volunteers and system stakeholders.

Thank you for your interest in presenting at the Literacy & Learning Symposium 2027 taking place April 28-29 in Edmonton, AB!  

Symposium 2027 will focus on celebrating Community Learning Network’s 40th Anniversary! 

We are seeking presentations with a focus on celebrating and growing adult literacy and learning in Alberta. 

We are currently accepting proposals from presenters with knowledge, skills, and wisdom to share. Our goal is to create a program that includes a variety of relevant, high quality and engaging learning sessions to strengthen and support the Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) system.  

Presenter Compensation 

The total compensation is $600 per 75-minute session and is paid directly to the lead presenter. Out of town lead presenters will be reimbursed for roundtrip mileage. Only lead presenters located more than 300 kms from the host venue will also be reimbursed for up to one night of accommodation. All expenses related to the provision of all materials, including resources and/or handouts needed for their session are the lead presenter’s responsibility. Contracts will be with lead presenters only. Any additional presenters are the responsibility of the lead presenter. 

Session Information 

  • Sessions are 75 minutes
  • Sessions will run in-person in Edmonton, AB:
    • Wednesday, April 28 from 2:00 - 3:15 pm
    • Thursday, April 29 from 9:15 - 10:30 am 
    • Thursday, April 29 from 11:00 am - 12:15 pm 
  • All session rooms are equipped with the following: 
    • 1 x screen 
    • 1 x LCD projector 
    • Complimentary Internet 
    • Audio/speakers (for sessions with 60 or more participants) 

*If you have an Apple device, please bring an adaptor for your technology (i.e. for your laptop)

To be considered, sessions must be engaging learning formats and must have clear learning objectives. Session participants should walk away with knowledge of a tool, strategy or approach that will enhance their ability to support learners. Participants should also come away from these sessions with a clear understanding of the relevance of the session topic to their work, as well as information on how and where to access additional resources and supports.

If interested in submitting a proposal, please be sure to: 

  • Prepare all information in advance and submit at one time as the CALP Portal times out with inactivity. Any information in the form that has not been submitted cannot be recovered.
  • Use clear, plain language and be as descriptive as possible.  
  • Be ready to upload a print quality photo for each presenter (minimum 300 dpi resolution).  
  • Adhere to all maximum word limits (text beyond the limit will be cut off).
  • Check that all content is correct.

Please provide a maximum 35-word biographical statement.
Photos of presenters will be included in the session description for attendees. Please send a print ready, good quality image for each presenter with only one person in the picture and the following specifications: jpeg format, minimum 300 dpi and high resolution.
Please use plain language and be as descriptive as possible. (Maximum 6 words.)
Please use plain language to provide a summary of your session, including two or three learning outcomes you want participants to leave with. Be as descriptive as possible. This information will be published on the CALP Portal to help registrants choose their sessions. (Maximum 100 words.) Please note: We reserve the right to edit your description for clarity and length.

Symposium Presenters: Present with Confidence, Engage with Purpose

This session is designed specifically for Symposium presenters in order to provide tips and tricks for how to build confidence when presenting, along with interactive ideas and recommendations for building a session that is engaging and relevant for CALP Staff’s professional development, learning and application to their everyday roles.

Symposium Planning Committee & Contact

Each year our Symposium Planning Committee oversees the planning of the Symposium. The Committee works closely with system stakeholders to develop an agenda of training and PD along with networking opportunities that are relevant and timely for CALPs across the province.
