Sample IMPROVE Planning Tool Template

CALP-funded family literacy programs should always include explicit instruction in the skill area they are trying to build. This intentional instruction is the first step to helping learners gain the skills they need.

One effective method of explicit instruction is “demonstrate, prompt, practice”, or “I do, We do, You do”. This method starts with the facilitator modelling the new skill, then gradually handing over responsibility to the learner. Over time, the learner becomes more confident as they build their new skill, resulting in using the skill independently.

The IMPROVE Planning Tool can be used to intentionally plan for this method of instruction.

Scaffolding Learning

CALP-funded family literacy programs are learner-centered and focus on the development of the adult's skills. Based on the facilitator's ongoing assessment of where the adult learners in the group are at in their understanding and use of the skill, the concept and explicit instruction of skills could spread out over a number of weeks. The sample video may be week one of an eight week session focused on fractions. It would be up to the facilitator and the group’s participants to assess what further learning they wanted to do in these skills and how much time they wanted to spend on each aspect until they feel confident to move on to a different area of learning.

Scaffolding the learning in a way that is responsive to what the learners want to know is important, and creates ongoing conversations between the facilitator and the learners of the group. The facilitator in CALP-funded family literacy programs commonly provides extended learning activities for learners to take home between the sessions each week in order for learners to continue their learning. During and following the sessions, information is provided regarding the other learning opportunities that the local CALP offers such as tutoring and courses in case the adult family literacy program learners would like to continue their learning journey through another mode of delivery.
