CALP Logic Model Review - We want to hear from you, Call for Presenters: Literacy and Learning Symposium 2018 and more...

Please note: we sent out this month's newsletter without the link to important information about the Call for Presenters for the 2018 Literacy and Learning Symposium. We are resending the newsletter with the appropriate link.

Greetings from the Chair

Karen PlourdeBy now all of us are deep into our programming…planning, hiring, arranging, booking rooms, statistic gathering and all that is required of us to meet the needs of our communities. Hold on! Christmas break is coming next month.

Do you know that you belong to one of the best organizations in our province? If you don’t know it already, you will as you continue within this organization!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome to the CLN Board, Colleen Thiessen, the Executive Director of Wetaskiwin Community Learning Program, as she becomes an ambassador for the CALP system we serve.

In this, my last year on the CLN Board, I am looking forward to do my part serving as Chair of this dynamic organization. As in every year on this Board, I am so looking forward to the range of resource-rich expertise, strategically engaged talent and fresh perspective sure to be present at every meeting.

My involvement with the CLN Board has been a conscientious journey with changes brought about by our collaborations, engaging discussions and live presentations, provoking new insights. Consequently, we have evolved into a well-organized, accomplished organization which gives me great pride.

The board environment has been dear to me because I am here with board members committed to making a difference in our province; with this experience, I have grown and deepened my ability to serve.

I look forward as chair of the CLN Board, to continued interaction with inspirational board members who represent achievement in their professional lives, and are willing to share ideas and love of the work. I recognize and honor their work, their lives, and the diversity and friendships cultivated. I look forward to the upcoming discussions, one more year of learning, and what we will accomplish together.

As we prepare to meet the challenges that persist or arise. I am proud that we continue to push for diversity, equity, and inclusion as we seek ways to integrate literacy initiatives into the public experience.

I cherish and hold dear friendships made and look forward to one more year of an awesome experience, working with all of you who are optimistic, bright and fearless!

Karen Plourde, Chair
CLN Board of Directors

CALP Logic Model Review - We want to hear from you

This fall, CLN has been leading a review of the CALP Logic Models and Measurement and Evaluation Frameworks. In particular, we are leading a review of the indicators and measures that CALPs are currently asked to report on.

The review process has included 3 face-to-face focus groups in Edmonton, where CALP staff have been invited to provide their thoughts and input on how we collect data and measure our success under the current model.

We are still looking for more input from CALP staff across the province!

  • We want to hear from those CALP staff who are directly involved with the collection of measures, and are familiar with the outcomes and indicators in the CALP Logic Model.

  • We are also keen to hear from those who are directly involved in reporting on the measures, outcomes and indicators to Advanced Education.

Here's how you can share your thoughts:

  • Complete the online survey at https://www.calp.ca/?lid=TNJ5B-ATKFF-WRAGS&pkClient=1&pkForm=102
  • Join us for an interactive webinar on November 28th, from 10:00 am - 11:30 am

    • Register for the webinar on the CALP Portal Training and Events Calendar at https://www.calp.ca/?lid=XMU9W-587NM-UTMQH&comaction=show&pid=6KCN7-GR7VR-E6MSC
    • Prior to the webinar, results of the provincial survey and the focus groups will be shared.
    • A summary of what we have heard, and potential recommendations for change will be part of the discussion
  • If you are unable to participate through these channels, you can also contact Lisa Dickner, Executive Director, to share your feedback. You can reach Lisa at 780-485-4926 or by email at ed@calp.ca

Thank you to those who have already been a part of the process.

We look forward to continuing the conversation throughout November.

Call for Presenters: Literacy and Learning Symposium 2018

The Literacy & Learning Symposium Planning Committee is now accepting proposals for sessions at Symposium 2018!

We are building a program that will include sessions and presentations from September 25th, 2018 to September 28th, 2018, between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm. The conference program will be a combination of full-day, half-day and 80-90 minute breakout sessions.

Symposium program threads will include:

Adult Literacy

Basic Computer Skills

Board Development

Budgeting & Finances

Community Capacity Building

Community Partnerships and Engagement

English Language Learning and Newcomer Support

Essential Skills

Facilitation Skills

Family Literacy

Learner-Focused Assessment for Adult Learners

Learner Support Services

Learning Disabilities

Marketing

Mental Health & Learning

Tutoring for English Language Learners (ELL)

To be considered, sessions must be interactive learning formats and must have clear learning objectives. Session participants should walk away with knowledge of a tool, strategy or tactic that will enhance their ability to support learners. Participants should also come away from these sessions with a clear understanding of the relevance of the session topic to their work, as well as information on how and where to access additional resources and supports.

Tech Talk training session

Presenters will be asked to answer three questions to identify the session's learning objectives:

  • What will the participant learn?
  • What will the participant do during the session?
  • What will the participant take away?

The answers you provide will be included in the published program information to help our Symposium delegates choose the sessions that will meet their individual professional learning needs.

For detailed information for presenters, go to: https://www.calp.ca/symposium/home/lls-2018-call-for-presenters.html

Deadline for submissions is Friday, December 8, 2017.

Changes to Canada-Alberta Job Grant to Support PD and Training

Did you know that there have been changes to the Canada-Alberta Job Grant?

Earlier this year, the Canada-Alberta Job Grant implemented changes that mean there are even more ways your CALP could benefit from this cost-sharing program!

Of particular interest,

  • Assistance on travel costs for small and medium-sized organizations (outside of Edmonton and Calgary) when training is over 100 km one way
  • 100% of training cost covered for eligible unemployed hires (up to $15,000) with incremental training requirement waived
  • And, as always, you can get up to two-thirds of the cost of training covered for eligible current employees

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) is an employer-driven training program where employers and government share the cost of training new and existing employees to increase their knowledge and skills.

A number of CALPs have already tapped into this grant to support their training needs and supplement their PD budgets.

If you haven't already explored if this could be a benefit to your organization, you can learn more at http://www.albertacanada.com/opportunity/employers/jobgrant.aspx
